Just last week Miley Cyrus released an explosive music video to her song“Mother’s Daughter” that many deemed a feminist anthem. Now, the 26-year-old is back in the spotlight as the cover star for the August issue of Elle and she’s opening up about a lot, including her days playing Hannah Montana, her marriage to Liam Hemsworth and her thoughts on the state of current politics.
It seems like Miley finally feels comfortable in her skin, something that she didn’t during her Hannah Montana days. After being asked if she ever wanted to break out of the Hannah Montana mold, Miley told Elle she did after a certain age. “I did once I was 18 because it felt ridiculous. The minute I had sex, I was kind of like, I can’t put the f*cking wig on again. It got weird. It just felt like…I was grown up.”
Miley said that she once compared how she felt to an image she saw backstage at Disneyland: a man dressed as Peter Pan was smoking a cigarette. “And I was like, ‘That’s me. That’s the kind of dreams I’m crushing.’ That’s how everyone felt with the bong video, but I’m not a Disney mascot. I’m a person,” she said.
The bong video Miley refers to is that infamous viral video from 2011 of Miley smoking salvia from a bong. At the time, the video seemed off-brand for someone who was regarded as a wholesome child star. That year Miley spoke to Marie Claire about the incident saying, “I made a mistake… I’m disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans.”
Miley said the Ashely O character she plays in the fifth season of Black Mirrorwas almost an exact take on her life as a Disney star. “They gave me the script and were like, ‘Let us know if you’re interested.’ And I read it and was like, ‘It’s not even if I’m interested or not. It’s just that no one else can play this because this is my life. Like, you just took my life,’” she said. She even said at times, she does still feel like Ashley O.
Miley also opened up about her relationship with Liam Hemsworth in her Elleinterview, saying that though she’s married, she’s still attracted to women, adding that she hates the term “wife.” “I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women. People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still fucking good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.” Miley said she prefers the word “partners,” which is what she feels her mom and dad are.
In her interview, Miley also revealed that she tried going to therapy, but that she was treated just like any another person, not like someone who deals with the circumstances of being famous. “Well, you probably feel paranoid because you’re smoking weed.” And it’s like, ‘No, I feel paranoid because people are putting little drones in my backyard.'”
For now, Miley said she’s still trying to figure out who she is. “I guess that’s what I’m still doing—trying on identities and seeing what fits.”
